For a household, usefulness means a specific task becomes easier without creating more setup and maintenance than it saves. Floor cleaning, checking in remotely and learning to code are different purchases. A humanoid demonstration should not be read as proof that a consumer product can handle arbitrary chores. Start with a bounded need and test it in the actual home.

For floor cleaning, measure the home first

List floor types, rugs, thresholds, furniture clearance and places a dock could live. Consider hair, cables and objects routinely left on the floor. Compare the cleaning and maintenance workflow, not just a headline suction figure. A dock can automate some steps while still requiring consumables, dirty-water handling or brush cleaning.

For remote presence, define consent and connectivity

A telepresence robot addresses communication and viewpoint control rather than cleaning or manipulation. Confirm Wi-Fi coverage, room access and who is allowed to connect. Check camera, microphone, account access and data-handling controls before trialing it in shared rooms. A communications aid should not be presented as an emergency-response or care service.

Keep home research separate from appliances

A research mobile manipulator may support experiments in domestic environments, but it brings calibration, software work and supervision requirements. If the aim is unattended everyday chores, ask for a demonstration of the exact task and written operating limits. Do not treat research videos or a developer SDK as a consumer reliability guarantee.

Use a return-window task test

Choose a representative routine and record the minutes spent preparing, operating, rescuing and cleaning the robot. Test the spaces and household conditions you actually have. Compare that workload against doing the task manually or with an ordinary appliance. Confirm warranty, replacement consumables and software support for the exact model and region.

Resource shortlist

Ordered by workflow, not by measured performance. These are editorial starting points. Follow each directory entry to its official documentation and confirm the exact configuration before purchasing.

01

Roborock →

A floor-cleaning product ecosystem to explore when the actual requirement is vacuuming or mopping.

Check before committing: Exact model and region, thresholds, rug behavior, dock requirements, consumables and app permissions.

02

iRobot Roomba →

A floor-cleaning product family to compare using the same home and maintenance test.

Check before committing: Available model, local service, consumables, software support and cleaning behavior on your floors.

03

Double Robotics →

A telepresence resource for exploring remotely controlled communication rather than household chores.

Check before committing: Current hardware availability, software service, home connectivity and camera access controls.

04

Hello Robot Stretch →

A research reference for understanding home manipulation experiments, not a promise of a general-purpose household appliance.

Check before committing: Development workload, supervision and documented support for the exact experimental task.

Turn the shortlist into a decision

Write down the task, operating conditions, success criteria and total ownership costs. Ask shortlisted suppliers to demonstrate your representative task, including failure recovery. Use the same acceptance test for each candidate.
